Plastic in Our Oceans

What are humans doing to our oceans? There is so much plastic in our oceans because every minute, the amount of one garbage truck full of plastic is dumped in the water. This plastic is then consumed by marine animals who mistake it for food. These animals often starve because they can’t digest the plastic and it fills their stomachs. Also, the plastic can wrap around their necks so they can no longer breathe and suffocate.

In fact, in November, a dead whale washed up on a shore in Indonesia. It had consumed a shocking amount of plastic including 25 plastic bags, 115 cups, more than 1,000 pieces of string, and more.

Although plastic is used in so many ways today, we can still try to reduce our consumption of it. Some small changes you could make include no longer using plastic straws and using metal water bottles instead of disposable plastic bottles. Also, instead of using plastic bags when shopping, use cloth, or tote, bags. This will help prevent some of your plastic waste from ending up in the ocean.
